A Revised Income Tax Return is a corrected version of your original tax filing that allows you to rectify mistakes, omissions, or inaccuracies. Under Section 139(5) of the Income Tax Act, 1961, taxpayers can file a revised return to correct errors in their original or belated return.
Once filed, the revised return completely replaces the earlier version, and only the corrected return is considered valid by the Income Tax Department for processing and assessment purposes.
A revised return is NOT a separate return - it's a correction of your original filing. The revised version becomes your final ITR for that financial year.
Incorrect income figures, wrong deduction claims, or any misreported financial details.
Forgotten income sources (interest, freelance income) or missed deductions (HRA, 80C, etc.).
Updates due to new tax rules, rate changes, or revised interpretation of tax provisions.
Proactively address discrepancies identified by the Income Tax Department during assessment.
